Unfunded Lives - Life-saving support when the system shuts you out
If you have ever looked around your street and wondered how someone so clearly unwell is not on the NDIS, you are not imagining it. Getting onto the NDIS can be brutal. For many people with severe, permanent disability and extreme functional impact, it takes thousands of dollars in specialist reports, long waits, and rules that even clinicians find confusing.
While the paperwork drags on, real people are running out of options, and sometimes running out of time.
This is why we created UNFUNDED LIVES™️- Supported by MELIORA®️.
The Roadblock: The "Evidence Paywall"
Across Australia, there are people who should have been on the NDIS from day one. Some live with constant pain and very limited mobility. Some are in squalor or malnourished. Others have carers who are doing everything they can and are still buckling under the strain.
The system was built to protect them, but poverty dictates access.
To get on the NDIS, or to fight an unfair funding cut, you must clear a hidden "Evidence Paywall" - costing thousands of dollars in private medical reports.
In poorer postcodes and rural towns, specialists are far away and public waitlists can take years. For those with rare or complex conditions, the evidence threshold is exceedingly high and yet poorly defined.
The door is locked, and the wall is too high to climb alone.
What we do, step by step
Unfunded Lives is a philanthropically funded systemic intervention program by Meliora Support Services. We keep it simple and sincere. We meet people exactly where they are, hear their story, and step into the gap using a strict two-part approach:
1. The Bridge (Stabilise First)
We put short-term, strictly capped practical help in place so the basics are covered. That can mean simple meals, hydration, basic hygiene, emergency supplies, and ensuring they are safe from falls. This is about physical survival and restoring a small measure of dignity while we tackle the bureaucracy.
2. The Engine (Build the Evidence & Advocate)
Next, we bypass excessive public waitlists by directly funding the private clinical reports required to prove eligibility. We work with GPs, make specialist bookings, and help clinicians tailor reports to exactly what the NDIA legislation requires. If an access request is knocked back, we do not disappear. As committed companions, we see the conflict through to resolution - including NDIA internal reviews and all the way to the Administrative Review Tribunal (ART) if necessary.
No one should walk that road alone.
Real people, real impact
Right now in the South Burnett, we are walking alongside Rhys and Scott. When we met them, both were close to catastrophe from disability-related injuries, malnutrition, and the sheer weight of daily tasks they could not physically complete.
With interim care wrapped around them and private appointments funded, both are safer while their eligibility struggle continues. Despite strong clinical reports, we have needed to escalate their matters all the way to the Tribunal. We are still working to secure their permanent federal access, even though their lives are totally consumed by their disabilities and the extreme pain they live in.
Why this still matters nine years on
The NDIS was built for exactly these situations, yet many of the people most in need are still locked out. Reports are expensive. The rules are complex. The goalposts constantly move. Assessors ask for the wrong evidence. Families are exhausted.
Without targeted philanthropic capital to bridge the gap and access the undeniable medical evidence needed, people remain unfunded for years, or worse. We have seen it firsthand in our communities, and we are determined to unlock the system so it works for everyone - especially the most vulnerable
